Welcome to the memorial page for

James M. Galloway

January 7, 2018

James Michael (Mike) Galloway fell asleep in the Lord January 7th, 2018 in Oak Ridge at the age of 83. He was preceded in death by his parents, Evan (“Jap”) and Rosalie Galloway; his brother, John (“Jack”) Galloway; and his aunt, Alice Cobb, all of Oak Ridge. Mike was born March 13, 1934 in Idaho Springs Colorado to Jap and Wilma Galloway. Wilma passed away early in his life and his father married Rosalie Kaminky in 1937. She became Mom to both Mike and his older brother Jack. In 1943 the family moved from Denver to Oak Ridge so his father could work in the Manhattan Project during the war.

He grew up in Oak Ridge and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout at the earliest age on record in the area at that time. Mike was a 1952 graduate of Oak Ridge High School. He served aboard destroyers in the US Navy from 1952 to 1956 and attended the University of Tennessee from 1956 to 1958. Mike worked at Y-12 in Oak Ridge from 1958-1966 in the Engineering Division. In 1966, he and his wife Marilyn moved to the Washington DC area, locating in Silver Spring MD, where he worked for the US Government. In 1967 the Galloways moved to St. Louis Missouri and Mike worked with the Department of Defense Mapping Agency. He retired in St. Louis in 1996 and the Galloways moved back to Oak Ridge in 2002 to be closer to extended family.

As members of New Life Nazarene Church in Oak Ridge, Mike and Marilyn have been known as a family of benevolent supporters reaching out to those needing help. They have also been constant encouragers to those around them, whether family, church, friends, neighbors or strangers. Mike could often be found recounting God’s blessings and gifts in his life even through times of trouble.

Family members always looked forward to Mike’s congeniality and good-natured teasing at the numerous family gatherings, along with many amusing tales of bygone days and youthful exploits. He was known for his rich and heartfelt prayers preceding festive meals.

Mike is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marilyn Jones Galloway, of Oak Ridge; son Scott and daughter-in-law Gina, of Kansas City KS; daughter Stacey, of Gainesville FL; granddaughter, Kaitlyn Galloway, of Ames Iowa, and grandson, Grayson Galloway, of Kansas City KS; as well as sisters-in-law, Betty Eason, of Oak Ridge, Pat Calhoun and her husband Jim of Union City TN, and Sarah Hawn of Lancing TN; a brother-in-law, Sam Jones of Knoxville; and a close cousin, Sharon Anderson, her husband Charlie of Oak Ridge and their son, Dwayne Anderson of San Francisco, CA.  He is also survived by nephews Alan Eason and Mark Eason of Oak Ridge, Tim Eason of Knoxville, Richard Eason of Orono, ME, Keith Hawn of Lancing TN, and their families. He is also survived by nieces Jacque Eason Keen of Marietta GA and Karen Dennis of Lancing TN, and their families; as well as by many beloved great-nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Thursday, January 11, 2018, at New Life Nazarene Church in Oak Ridge. Pastor Keith Robinson will officiate.  Receiving of friends will be from 12:00-1:00pm at the church, with the service at 1:00 and burial immediately following at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial gifts be sent to the New Life Nazarene Church, 200 Lafayette Drive, Oak Ridge or the Epilepsy Foundation of East Tennessee, 1715 East Magnolia Ave. Knoxville 37917.
