Welcome to the memorial page for

Malcolm "Mack" Patterson Crews Jr.

November 27, 1929 ~ September 21, 2016 (age 86) 86 Years Old

Malcolm (Mack)Patterson Crews, Jr. passed away on September 21, 2016 with his family by his side.  Mack was born on November 27, 1929, in Dickson, Tennessee. His family moved to Oak Ridge during the Manhattan Project. His father, Malcolm, joined Union Carbide, K-25 plant, wherein he became a General Foreman.  After graduating from Oak Ridge High School in 1949, where he lettered in track, he joined the U.S. Air Force .  He was stationed at the Lackland Air force Base, Squadron 3726, Flight 4255 in San Antonio, Texas.  It was when he was stationed in Tucson, AZ,  that he met and married his bride, Lupita Eliza Valdez. After serving his country for four years, he returned to East Tennessee in Roane County where his family had bought a working farm in the Dyllis Community.  He was a member of Dyllis Baptist Church where his father served as deacon. Recently, he has attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church with his niece Norma, and where his wife and children were members.

Mack furthered his education that began in the Air Force and became a machinist with Union Carbide (Y-12) Plant.  Later he was promoted to Machine Shop Foreman and was rewarded throughout his career for his achievements, including one that proved to be very cost-effective for the company.   He also served his community as a deputy with the Roane County Sheriff’s Department. Mack retired from Martian Marietta Energy Systems in 1988. Mack continued to live in the Dyllis Community for many years, until his health declined, then moved to Oak Ridge to live with his beloved family and where he received the best of care.

He had a great love for his family and friends. He had a big heart and humanitarian spirit, happy to help those less fortunate.  He was a wonderful father and he spent his free time taking his family on many weekend drives to the Smoky Mountains National Park, swimming on Watts Bar Lake, beach vacations and hunting and fishing with his sons. He fell in love with his wife’s native country and there were many family trips to Mexico, spending time with relatives and friends who embraced him.  One of his favorite pastimes there was deep sea fishing, and listening to mariachi music! At home, he maintained a large garden every year and enjoyed cooking and entertaining his family and friends.  Throughout the years, there was always an array of animals living on the farm, including exotic chickens, homing pigeons, and rabbits, to name a few.

In his retirement, he enjoyed watching his grandson Cameron’s sports activities, surrounding himself with family, tending to his garden, and working crossword puzzles.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Malcolm Patterson Crews, Sr. and Jeri Farley Crews, his wife Lupita Valdez Crews, his sons, Malcolm Patterson Crews, III and Daniel Jackson Crews, his sister Jeanette Crews Brannon, niece Jeri Campbell Brooks, and great-nephew Joel Karnes.

Mack is survived by his daughter, Lynn Crews-Brooks and grandson Cameron J. Brooks, his sister Peggy Whitehouse (Ken), their children Tammy Churillo (Jerry) and Scott Whitehouse (Kim), and her grandchildren Ava, Max, Michael, Kristina and Jennifer, niece (like daughter) Norma Skeen (Dexter), their sons Dexter and Robert (Bette), and their grandchildren Cody, Jacob, Bridgette, Daniel, Ana and Christian; niece Mierya Karnes (Roger), their daughter Carla (Brandon) Pelizzari, and their grandchildren Jolie and Jay.
