Leota Hawks Obituary

Mrs. Leota Yvonne Jackson Hawks, of Coalfield, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on March 10th, 2024, at the Kate B. Reynolds Home in Winston-Salem, N.C.

She had been in declining health for several years and was staying with her daughter in Pilot Mountain, NC, for healthcare purposes.

She loved her family unconditionally and enjoyed spending time with her grandsons. Many hours were enjoyed watching movies or older TV shows as a family. She enjoyed reading, sewing, crocheting, and was an excellent cook. She had a passion for genealogy and history and had the ability to remember the ancestry of many Coalfield families.

She had worked at Jefferson Standard Insurance, Pan Am, Tyco Airport, Brevard Community College, Martin Marietta, Morgan County Schools, Coalfield Library and The United States Post Office.

She had many interesting stories about her life experiences at these employers. Education was very important to her. She graduated from Coalfield School and attended the University of Tennessee. She furthered her education at Brevard Community College, obtaining an associate degree. She was very well educated in many subjects.

Left to cherish her memory are a son, Verpo Lynn Hawks of Coalfield;

Daughter, Marla (Donald) Corns of Pilot Mountain, NC;

Grandsons, Jeremy Corns and Zackary Corns both of Pilot Mountain, NC, and Austin (Fiancée, Brancey Johnson) Corns of Ararat, NC;

Brothers, David (Carol) Jackson, W.R. Jackson, both of Coalfield;

Sisters, Edna Johnson of Oliver Springs, Anna Mac Fritts and Kathleen Fulp both of Coalfield;

Sister-in-law Vickie Jackson of Coalfield, and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Poin Dexter Hawks Jr.; parents, David Elbert Jackson, and Anna Francis McKinney Jackson; brothers, Cecil Jackson, Paul H. Jackson, John Jackson, and Charles Allen Jackson; sisters, Jewell Cloud, Roberta Cardwell, Jane Hinds, and Margaret Peters.

A special thanks to Brancey Johnson, RN, Jerry Wolfe, Dr. Darryl Rhyne, Dr. David Defeo; staff at Northern Regional Hospital in Mt. Airy, NC and Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, NC, for the love, compassion, and care extended to Leota and family that was above and beyond exceptional.
